Explore the area

In the heart of Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, beside the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal.

Pencelli Castle makes an ideal location for walking, cycling, mountain biking, pony trekking and canoeing on the adjoining canal, as well as relaxing in the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful area.

The grassy, heather-clad mountains of the Brecon Beacons National Park have been moulded by nearly eight millennia of human activity. Today this is a fine place for an activity holiday, with walking, mountain biking and horse riding trails, caves, forests and a historic canal — plus characterful towns, pubs, farmers’ markets and Michelin-starred restaurants.

There are numerous footpaths and cycle trails, and the canal towpath leads directly from Pencelli, so the same gate works for a short stroll or a long day.

Brecon – approx. 4 miles

Historic market town to the west. Shops, the cathedral, and supper if you do not fancy the village pub. Buses stop at the park entrance for Brecon and Abergavenny.

Pen y Fan

Walk straight onto the Beacons. The park is within walking distance of the highest peaks, and the ridge paths leave from the lanes around the village.

Towpath on the doorstep. Hire a day boat, or simply walk until the light goes. Canoeing leaves from the canal beside the field.

Taff Trail cycle route

The Taff Trail passes the entrance. Mountain biking, pony trekking and bird watching are all part of a stay here.

The Royal Oak is a short walk — about 150 yards.

Supper, and the way home

The Royal Oak Inn is a quaint traditional village pub. After a day on the hills it is close enough that you do not need the car.

Finding the gate

From the A40, heading south after the Brecon bypass, take the B4558 at the signs for Llanfrynach and later Pencelli. There is a narrow bridge. If you are travelling north on the A40, approach via Tal-y-Bont. The site is at the south end of Pencelli.
